10 Big Myths about orthodontics explained

Trust us when we say Dr. Kirsten Romani and our team know there are quite a few myths about braces out there nowadays. But before you buy into those myths, we think you should get the facts first!

Our good friends at the American Association of Orthodontists set the record straight (no pun intended) and have provided some information that sheds some light on the myths and facts of orthodontics.

Here are a couple:

MYTH: Braces are ugly, call attention to themselves and would be embarrassing in business settings.

FACT: Today's braces may be nearly invisible, made from clear plastic, or unseen, mounted on the back (lingual) side of the teeth.

MYTH: My family dentist says he can straighten my teeth.

FACT: An orthodontist has 2-3 years of specialized training beyond dental school and is a specialist at straightening teeth and insuring proper form and function. A dentist may see a handful of cases a year amid drilling and filling. An orthodontist only practices orthodontics and treats hundreds of patients.

We encourage you to check out the rest of the myths today!

If you have any questions about orthodontics or your treatment here at Romani Orthodontics, feel free to give us a call or ask Dr. Romani on Facebook! Serving the greater East Providence and Chepachet, Rhode Island areas, Dr. Romani is your orthodontic specialist, offering braces for children, teens and adults.

We hope you're enjoying your Friday!

Hey Dr. Romani, when should I replace my toothbrush?

Great question! With fall upon us is here, so is the dreaded cold and flu season. As you're recovering from your cold, Dr. Romani will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart and keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips this fall:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that healthy people change their toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles are bent or broken. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Hope this tip helps! Feel free to call us at Romani Orthodontics if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Straight talk with Dr. Romani

People ask our staff at Romani Orthodontics why we work so tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s great to have a smile full of evenly-aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are also less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, we encourage you to fill out a quick appointment request form.

At Romani Orthodontics, our focus is you – your needs, your comfort, and your smile! We are an all-digital, computerized office, utilizing the latest and most efficient treatment procedures, allowing us more time to get to know you and customizing your treatment to meet your expectations. We invite you to give us a call at 401-829-4789 (East Providence office) or 401-371-4086 (Chepachet office) to set up a free consultation. Dr. Romani can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Ask Dr. Romani: Why are regular checkups so important?

If you're brushing and flossing daily during your orthodontic treatment, we think that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting Romani Orthodontics, of course).

While October is National Orthodontic Health Month, this month also marks National Dental Hygiene Month, and it's a great time for us to remind you about taking good care of your oral health during your orthodontic treatment.

Your dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also typically include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not visited the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit with Dr. Kirsten Romani, and we will provide a few great references in Providence, Chepachet or nearby communities!

Romani Orthodontics at the Schulman Study Group meeting!

To better serve our phenomenal patients with the highest quality orthodontic care possible, Dr. Kirsten Romani, Melissa and Robin are in St. Louis for an orthodontic Treatment Coordinator's meeting with the Schulman Study Group. The Schulman Study Group is an association of nationally prominent orthodontic practices from among the top 1 percent of all offices.

Because we are committed to continuing education, one of the ways Dr. Romani and our remarkable staff improve our service is by attending important conferences, meetings and seminars about the always-exciting world of orthodontics.

The Schulman Study Group meeting is always an educational event and one that allows Dr. Romani to consult with top orthodontists and stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. Romani Orthodontics, reminding you to protect your mouth this fall

With fall sports under way for a lot of our patients, Dr. Kirsten Romani thought today would be a good time to remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this fall.

You should ALWAYS wear a mouth guard when playing sports, but especially this month. Why? September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month.

More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.

Our staff at Romani Orthodontics encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists' website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and facial protection.

We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in fall sports! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions! Have a wonderful weekend!

Dr. Kirsten Romani presents: Braces-friendly dessert!

Most of our patients at Romani Orthodontics are already back in school, but that doesn't mean summer is quite over! That's why Dr. Romani and our staff wanted to share with our patients a delicious summer recipe you can savor before diving into all that homework! Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists made an appetizing (and braces-friendly!) dessert that is sure to delight everyone from grandma to your little brother. Remember, a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps you achieve the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment at Romani Orthodontics.

So, with that, here's the recipe for "Lime-Graham Cheesecake Nibbles"!

Ingredients:

Crust:

• 1½ cups graham-cracker crumbs (about 9 double-square crackers, crushed)
• 3 Tablespoons margarine, melted
• – or –
• 1½ cups gingersnap crumbs (about 24 to 30 gingersnap cookies, crushed)
• 3 Tablespoons margarine, melted

Filling:

• 2 eggs, separated
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 2 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
• ¾ cup sugar
• 3 drops green food coloring
• 2 Tablespoons lime juice
• 1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour

Directions

Preheat oven to 325°. Line two muffin tins with 24 cupcake papers. In a medium bowl, stir together the crumbs and margarine. Spoon 1 Tablespoon of the crumb mixture into each paper. Press down the mixture firmly with the bottom of a small juice glass. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, beat together egg whites and the salt until the mixture forms soft peaks. Set aside. In a large bowl, use the mixer to beat together the cream cheese, sugar, food coloring, lime juice and flour, until fluffy. Add the yolks until well mixed, then use a spoon to fold in the whites. Spoon a heaping tablespoon of the lime mixture into each paper. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool on the counter for 20 minutes, then keep refrigerated. Makes two dozen.

Enjoy this great end-of-summer dish! Here are some more delicious braces-friendly recipes! Happy Thursday!

Ask Dr. Romani: When should my child visit for a consultation?

At Romani Orthodontics, we believe a child's first visit to the orthodontist should be enjoyable and positive. The more you and your child know about the first visit, the better you will feel.

Many parents in Providence and Chepachet assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Dr. Kirsten Romani for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That’s right—seven.

You're probably wondering: "Ok, Dr. Romani, what’s so great about age seven?" Well, at that point, enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Romani to make a determination about whether any problems are present. Also, the first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Dr. Romani calls “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. So, if your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, please give us a call at Romani Orthodontics to schedule a free orthodontic evaluation.

Dr. Romani wants to know: Do you know where your retainer is?

If you've recently completed treatment at Romani Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Kirsten Romani will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After your braces come off, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, always provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Romani is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment, we encourage you to read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call!

Lastly, we'd like to congratulate Lisa Brown for winning our random drawing. Lisa and her daughter Brianna are going to see Justin Bieber tonight! Have fun you two!!

National Smile Week at Romani Orthodontics!

Who says there are no holidays in August? It’s National Smile Week, and a fantastic time to remind our patients at Romani Orthodontics to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining during your orthodontic treatment! Our friends at the American Dental Association recommend the following for good oral hygiene:

• Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

• Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

• Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

• Visit your dentist regularly in Providence or Chepachet for professional cleanings and oral exams during orthodontic treatment.

Lastly, a great reason to smile is this: smiling can actually help you live longer according to a recent study! So remember to keep smiling and have a great rest of National Smile Week!

Romani Orthodontics, supporting the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life

Dr. Kirsten Romani and our staff at Romani Orthodontics continue to support the Relay For Life, East Providence. In May, we donated $1,000 to this worthy cause. The walk was held at Pierce Memorial Stadium in early June - each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Through research funding, patient services, and advocacy, the American Cancer Society has already made great progress. Cancer occurrence and death rates for most cancers are on the decline, and more than 10 million cancer survivors are alive today.

We are proud of our efforts, and encourage you to donate this worthy organization. Have a great weekend.

"Dentists, orthodontists ... they're all the same, right?"

Dr. Kirsten Romani and our staff hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist. Before becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Romani started out in dental school at University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, and earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, just like your dentist.

After dental school however, Dr. Romani decided she wanted to practice orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So she entered a residency program for two more years of education and training at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where she became an expert in orthodontics, which is a profession that focuses on tooth and jaw alignment, as well as bite problems such as overbites and under bites.

Today, Dr. Romani is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and is committed to delivering healthy and beautiful smiles to patients of all ages in Providence, Chepachet, and surrounding communities.

Isn't it nice to know there's a dental expert in Dr. Romani to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and bite might need?

"I'm 41 years old - I'm probably too old for braces, right?"

Of course not! One of the first things we tell older patients is that no one—and we mean, no one—is "too old" for braces.

In fact, our staff at Romani Orthodontics read a fascinating statistic not too long ago: the number of adults getting braces has actually jumped 24 percent in just a little over 14 years! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age and society when looks matter as much as the next thing, and at a time when evenly-aligned and beautiful teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Kirsten Romani can be successful at any age, and we know that you adults especially appreciate the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, we invite you to come in for a initial free consultation. Please give us a call to set one up!

You may also ask us any question related to orthodontic treatment on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/RomaniOrthodontics.

Happy Tuesday!

Ask Dr. Romani: What can Invisalign® do for my oral health?

When considering treatment options, patients often ask Dr. Kirsten Romani how Invisalign is different than braces. Actually, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign at Romani Orthodontics than you may know. Invisalign, a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, not only straighten your teeth, but can improve your oral health as well! Here are a few ways Invisalign can help improve your health, while shaping your natural, beautiful smile:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque, and gum disease.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, we encourage you to ask Dr. Romani during your next scheduled appointment. Dr. Romani is a Certified Invisalign Premier Provider in East Providence and Chepachet and surrounding communities.

You may also post your question on our interactive Facebook page! Have a great weekend everyone!

Our two offices are scheduled so that patients experiencing a problem can always receive attention from our team at one of our locations. Dr. Romani is also available after hours for emergency appointments.

We are now more available than ever, and are answering the phones Mondays through Fridays, 8-5 pm. This includes the lunch hour for all our busy parents and adult patients to connect with us.

June is the National Smile Month!

Now that we’re in June, the Romani Orthodontics Team thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, and a good time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene, especially while in orthodontic treatment. According to our friends at the American Dental Association, a person's smile outranked eyes, hair and body as the most important physical feature!

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health during your treatment so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful clip showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss every day to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment.
* Visit your general dentist regularly (usually every six months apart) in addition to your regularly schedule appointments here at Romani Orthodontics.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I am involved in the Schulman Study Group, a nationally recognized association of orthodontists who share a commitment to exceptional patient care, quality of orthodontic experience, and continuing education.

I am happily married to my husband, Dan, and we are the proud parents of Sophia, Daniel, and Ashlyn. We live in Chepachet, in the historic 1805 Angel Tavern, situated on a small farm with a variety of animals including Belted Galloway cows, chickens, honey bees, and a pet turkey. We also have a former stray cat and two rescued Bassett hounds. I enjoy spending time with my family, being a soccer mom to my three children, gardening, and collecting early American antiques.
